‘Bacurau’ Conquers Cinema Brazil Best Picture, Five More Awards

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – The Brazilian western “Bacurau“, by Kléber Mendonça Filho and Juliano Dornelles, was the big winner of the Cinema Brazil Grand Prize ceremony on Sunday, October 11th, conquering six awards, among them best picture, direction, and original screenplay. It competed in 15 categories.

The award ceremony, nicknamed the “Brazilian Oscar”, was held remotely, hosted by Marina Person and Adriana Couto. It was broadcast by TV Cultura and also by the channel’s Youtube and Facebook.

In addition to “Bacurau,” other of the evening’s favorites were “Invisible Life” by Karim Aïnouz, with five awards, and “Simonal” by Leonardo Domingues, with four. Also noteworthy were the biography “Hebe – the Brazilian Star” and the documentary ” I’m Waiting for Carnival”, by Marcelo Gomes.

The selection of feature films competing for the award is based on a voting system involving the members of the academy. After disclosing the finalists, they elect the winners, with the participation of the public, which can vote in the categories of best fictional feature film and best documentary.
