RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – President Jair Bolsonaro’s speech on Sunday, April 19th, to demonstrators calling for military intervention in a protest outside the Army Headquarters in Brasília, caused great unease among members of the government’s military wing, for two reasons.
First, it places the Armed Forces in an uncomfortable position by taking part in an anti-democratic protest.
Secondly, he was present in a crowd, which is contrary to what all international health authorities, such as the World Health Organization (WHO), and even the Brazilian Ministry of Health, have been preaching to fight the spread of the coronavirus.
According to reports, some generals have expressed discomfort to their colleagues in the government.
Ministers close to President Jair Bolsonaro also voiced their surprise over his actions and fear that this type of behavior will ultimately add to his isolation.
A prominent general stressed “that the Armed Forces are immunized against the antidemocratic virus”.
