RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – Argentina will hand Brazilian authorities details of more than 5,000 football fans with violent backgrounds as part of efforts to guarantee security at the Copa America, officials said on Thursday, May 30.
The cooperation agreement will be signed by Argentina’s Security Minister Patricia Bullrich and her Brazilian counterpart Sergio Moro, the Argentine government announced.
The database includes 5,400 supporters from 44 local clubs who are banned from entering Argentine stadiums.
Earlier this month, the Brazilian government revealed it would cooperate with security forces in other countries to compile a blacklist of supporters who have participated in acts of hooliganism.
Immigration officials at airports, seaports, and land border crossings have been instructed to prevent listed offenders from entering the country.
The Copa America will be held from June 14th to July 7th in the Brazilian cities of São Paulo, Porto Alegre, Rio de Janeiro, Belo Horizonte, and Salvador.
The South American Football Confederation (CONMEBOL) has said it will hire around 10,000 security personnel to patrol the inside of stadiums during the event. Brazil’s police force will be responsible for law enforcement outside the venues.
