Brazil: over 60 lawyers denounce restrictions to the defense of those involved in the January 8 acts

By João Pedro Magalhães

During a press conference held with members of the National Congress last Tuesday (9), over 60 lawyers who work in defense of those arrested due to the acts of January 8 denounced a series of irregularities and disrespect for the prerogatives of the defense.

According to lawyer Cláudio Civano, about 100 lawyers were given a deadline to present their defense in oral arguments in 15-minute videos.

The Justices were supposed to watch all the arguments, but – according to him – this did not happen.

“It so happens that, three minutes before the deadline, the last lawyer delivered (the video) at 11:57 pm on the 16th.”

“On the 17th, at midnight, Alexandre de Moraes had already presented his vote with 24 pages, which leads us to believe that he didn’t even have time to read the defense of the lawyers,” said Civano.

Federal Congressman Marcel Van Hattem (Novo- RS) also stressed the importance of respecting the prerogatives of lawyers and repudiated the abuses of the (STF) Justices.

“If the choice is not to pacify, we will also know how to go to the ultimate consequences so that the Justices of the Supreme Court who abuse their authority are also thoroughly investigated, impeached, and then convicted for the crimes they are committing against the Brazilian citizens and our democracy,” said the congressman.
