Venezuela Flags US Base Plans in Disputed Zone to UN

Venezuela has informed the UN about the U.S.’s plans to set up a military base in disputed territory with Guyana.

Foreign Minister Yván Gil spoke at the 78th UN General Assembly in New York. He criticized the U.S. for raising tensions by pursuing this action.

Moreover, he questioned America’s involvement in the long-standing issue between Venezuela and Guyana.

Gil also accused the U.S. of aiming to tap into oil resources through ExxonMobil. He mentioned that the oil giant is working with the Guyanese government.

According to him, this partnership violates international law since the area is disputed.

Furthermore, Gil revealed that Guyana keeps acting in a controversial manner about the contested land.

Just two days ago, Venezuela’s National Assembly approved a referendum on defending the Essequibo region.

This area spans over 159,000 square kilometers and is claimed by Venezuela based on a 1966 agreement.

Background

This development comes amid growing geopolitical tensions in the region. Venezuela’s move to involve the UN signifies a plea for international intervention.

It also shows that the country is keen on resolving the matter through diplomatic channels rather than military action.

Interestingly, the U.S. has not yet provided an official response to these claims, leaving room for speculation.

Additionally, the issue of ExxonMobil’s involvement raises concerns about corporate interests in global politics.

The unanimous approval of the referendum by Venezuela’s National Assembly underscores the nation’s united stance on the Essequibo.

Experts believe that the UN’s role could be pivotal in de-escalating the situation.

As both nations dig in their heels, the eyes of the world are on the UN to facilitate a peaceful resolution.
