Roraima, Santa Catarina and Mato Grosso are the Brazilian states that grew the most

The recently released Demographic Census 2022 by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) provides insights into population growth trends across different states in Brazil.

Roraima emerged as the state with the highest population growth, experiencing a remarkable increase of 41.3% from 2010 to 2022, despite being the smallest state.

The population rose from 450,479 to 636,303 inhabitants during this period.

Other states that witnessed significant population growth include Santa Catarina (21.8%), Mato Grosso (20.5%), and Goiás (17.5%).

In terms of absolute numbers, São Paulo gained the most inhabitants, with an increase of 3.1 million, followed by Santa Catarina with 1.4 million.

Conversely, Alagoas, Rio de Janeiro, and Bahia had population growth rates of less than 1%.

São Paulo remains the most populous state in Brazil, with 44.4 million inhabitants, followed by Minas Gerais (20.5 million) and Rio de Janeiro (16 million).

Roraima, Amapá, and Acre have the smallest populations, with 636 thousand, 734 thousand, and 830 thousand people, respectively.

The Southeast and Northeast regions continue to have the largest populations in Brazil, with 84.8 million and 54.6 million inhabitants, respectively.

These proportions have remained relatively stable over the past 12 years.

The South, North, and Center-West regions account for 14.7%, 8.5%, and 8.0% of the population.

The Demographic Census reveals a significant slowdown in population growth, with an annual increase of 0.5% from 2010 to 2022.

If this trend persists, Brazil’s population is expected to stop growing in the near future.

After facing multiple delays, the Demographic Census was conducted between August 2022 and February 2023, primarily through in-person interviews, with telephone and online self-completion of questionnaires also utilized.

The census, originally scheduled for 2020, was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic and budgetary challenges.

The data collection stage concluded on May 28, 2023, and further data on age, gender, skin color, and religion will be released in subsequent stages by IBGE.

Here are the top ten growing states:
