Portuguese-Speaking Nations Eye Major Energy Market Share

Today, former Portuguese Foreign Minister Antonio Cruz said that the Community of Portuguese Language Countries (CPLP) could provide up to 20% of world oil and gas by 2035.

He spoke in Lisbon at a conference about the CPLP’s broader roles. He stressed that this organization is not just about political summits.

In fact, various government sectors actively work together to make plans and find ways to cooperate.

The CPLP currently represents 270 million people or 3.7% of the world’s population.

Furthermore, these countries already contribute 6% of the world’s oil and a bit more than 1% of its natural gas.

With new energy projects in Mozambique, São Tomé, Brazil, and Angola, the CPLP’s global energy contribution could rise to 15-20% by 2035.

However, Cruz also mentioned challenges. For instance, trade between Portugal and CPLP countries has declined.

Now, it makes up less than 4% of Portugal’s total foreign trade. On the other hand, the European Union remains Portugal’s main trade partner, with over 70% of external trade.

In conclusion, Cruz warned that regional loyalties could weaken the CPLP’s common goals. He cited Brazil’s changing focus as an example.

The conference also featured other former ministers and diplomats who discussed Portugal’s global relationships.

Background

The CPLP, or the Community of Portuguese Language Countries, includes nations like Portugal, Brazil, Mozambique, and Angola.

Founded in 1996, it aims to promote cooperation among its member states. Historically, these countries have shared not only a language but also political and cultural ties.

However, this anticipated boost in energy production marks a new chapter for the organization.

Energy has become a vital focus globally due to increasing demand and climate change concerns.

The CPLP’s projected rise in oil and gas production could position it as a significant player in the global energy market.

It’s important to note that this comes with environmental responsibilities. Sustainable practices will be crucial to balance this growth while mitigating climate impact.
