For the first time, the Japanese government announced that more than 10% of its population is 80 or older just before a national holiday celebrating those over 65.

Currently, 29.1% of Japanese are older than 65, a small rise from last year’s 29%.

Japan leads the world in its rate of elderly people. It surpasses Italy, which has 24.5%, and Finland with 23.6%.

The country has 124 million residents. Of these, 20 million are 75 or older, and 12.59 million have crossed 80.

The Japanese population is both shrinking and getting older. Young people are having kids later because of money issues.

As a result, more seniors are staying in the workforce. Over nine million people older than 65 still work.

They make up 13.6% of all workers. Experts expect nearly 35% of Japan’s people will be older than 65 by 2040.

Background

Japan has a long history of respecting its elderly. This cultural trait comes from various traditional beliefs.

For example, the holiday called “Respect for the Aged Day” celebrates older people. This national event takes place every September.

It serves as a reminder to honor the wisdom and experience of seniors.

After World War II, Japan saw rapid economic growth. This era, called the “Economic Miracle,” changed society.

More people moved to cities and started to live longer. Advances in medicine also played a part in this trend. Better healthcare meant more people reached old age.

But the aging population also brings challenges. Japan’s pension system is under strain. Fewer young people means fewer workers to support the elderly.

The government is exploring options like raising the retirement age. They also want to involve more women and foreigners in the workforce.

The issue has even affected the housing market. Traditional homes are too big for older couples. So, new types of housing are emerging.

These include more accessible apartments and community living spaces.
