Brazil’s Journey to Smart Tourism Destinations

Brazil’s commitment to enhancing its tourist attractions through technology is transforming the nation into a hub of smart tourism destinations.

This trend is driven by the “Smart Tourist Destinations—DTI Brazil Model,” a national strategy supported by the Ministry of Tourism in collaboration with the Institute Ciudades del Futuro (ICF).

This initiative aims to bring innovative and sustainable visibility to tourist spots, focusing on improving both the quality of life for locals and the experiences of tourists.

In this digital era, Brazilian cities are embracing technology.

São Luís, for instance, has launched the Atenas system, a tourist intelligence system that provides real-time data on tourist profiles, hotel occupancy, and visitor traffic.

This tool is a comprehensive source of tourist data, merging information from local tourism departments and national statistics.

Porto Velho has adopted an artificial intelligence system named MarIA. This smart chatbot assists both residents and tourists in navigating local attractions.

MarIA recommends sites and activities tailored to individual user profiles, offering a more personalized tourism experience.

The DTI Brazil Model, originally developed in Spain, aids cities in making their tourist attractions more visible and accessible through technology.

The model’s adaptation by Brazil’s Ministry of Tourism is a step towards enhancing digital transformation in tourism.

Aiming to improve tourist experiences and boost the competitiveness of these destinations.

Once they meet specific smart tourism criteria, cities are awarded a “DTI in Transformation” certification.

After implementing a substantial part of their transformation plans covering various aspects like governance, innovation, technology, and sustainability, they receive the DTI Seal.

Ten Brazilian cities were recently recognized with the DTI in Transformation certification, marking a significant achievement in their digital tourism journey.

Ponta Grossa (PR)
Santos (SP)
Joinville (SC)
Vila Velha (ES)
Fortaleza (CE)

These cities have successfully completed all the required stages and are now set to offer enhanced tourist experiences.

This progress reflects a broader shift in the tourism sector, moving towards a more integrated and technologically advanced approach that benefits both visitors and local communities.
