Sky, NET, Claro, Oi and Vivo to Send Natural Disaster Warnings in Brazil’s Northeast

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – Telecoms Claro, NET, Sky, Oi, Vivo, and Nossa TV will now send out Civil Defense and CENAD (National Center for Risk and Disaster Management) warnings to pay-TV subscribers in the Northeast.

The feature began in seven states in this region on Monday, December 16th, which will complete the coverage for all of Brazil.

Registering is not required to be notified of natural disasters. These are automatically received through a pop-up message, with 10 seconds of exposure time which can be closed manually to avoid disturbing an important show on TV.

The feature has finally reached the Northeastern states of Bahia, Ceará, Maranhão, Pernambuco, Piauí, Rio Grande do Norte, and Sergipe after being implemented in Alagoas in September 2019.

Civil Defense sends warnings to mobile phones via SMS

The measure is complementary to the alerts sent by SMS on floods, downpours, landslides, windstorms, and hail. Over 700 million messages have been sent to 6.7 million lines between February 2017 and August 2019.

In this case, registering is required: customers of Claro, Oi, TIM, Vivo, Algar, Sercomtel or Nextel may send a message containing the zip code to number 40199.
