New Year’s Eve celebration on Avenida Paulista in São Paulo may be possible – Mayor

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – The city of São Paulo has set up a working group with several departments to evaluate holding the New Year’s Eve party on Avenida Paulista. According to the mayor, Ricardo Nunes (MDB), the event may be held. Still, the final word will be from the Health Secretariat after evaluating all the risks involved.

“We are a city with 12 million inhabitants. There is no such thing as a small event, these are large public parties, and to do this, we need to plan. That is why three workgroups were formed, with their respective coordinators, and the Health Secretariat always gives the final word. It may be carried out; we are not making an affirmative word unless the Secretariat authorizes it,” said Nunes in a press conference this Tuesday, 3.

The traditional New Year’s Eve party at Avenida Paulista has been held since 1996 at the famous tourist spot in the capital of São Paulo.

This was the first year the city had to cancel both that event and the LGBTQIA+ Pride Parade, which had a virtual format in 2020 and 2021.

On Tuesday, Mayor Ricardo Nunes announced the anticipation of the beginning of vaccination against the Covid-19 for people aged 25. Starting this Friday, August 6, the immunization will be done in more than 700 vaccination points in the São Paulo capital.

The initial forecast was to start only next week for this group. On Wednesday, the vaccine will be applied to people age 27, and on Thursday to people age 26. The dates for the other age groups have not yet been announced by the city hall.
