Off-Duty State and Civil Police Officers Exchange Gunfire in São Paulo After Traffic Accident

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – A state police (PM) and a civil police officer exchanged gunfire on Saturday night in the neighborhood of Perus, north of São Paulo capital, after a traffic accident. The case is under investigation by the forces and the Civil Police.

The officers’ names have not been disclosed. The accident followed by shooting occurred on Fiorelli Peccicacco Avenue. Neither officers were injured, but a 36-year-old driver passing through the scene was hit by shrapnel.

According to Civil Police records, a witness stated that the PM was driving his car intoxicated when he cut off the civil police officer’s car. A small collision occurred. The two got out of the car with guns in hand and the shootout began.

According to the Civil Police, they both exchanged gunfire until both their weapons were unloaded. Three parked cars were shot. After the shooting, there were also physical attacks.

The PM was injured in the face and was assisted in an emergency room, according to the police. PM, SAMU and Fire Department vehicles were sent to the scene. The civil police officer provided clarifications at the scene.

By means of a note, the SSP (Secretariat of Public Safety) stated that the PM officer was injured “after a physical fight”.

The weapons of the two officers involved were seized and sent to the forensic department. The case was recorded by the 33rd PD (Police District), in Pirituba, and was forwarded to the 46th PD, in Perus.

“The PM’s conduct is also being investigated under an administrative proceeding,” added the SSP. According to information, the police officer is a member of the Mounted Police.
