Four People Die in Landslides in Campos do Jordão

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – Four people died due to landslides in the neighborhoods Vila Paulista and Vila Britânia, municipality of Campos do Jordão, in São Paulo state, which occurred after the rain that hit the sites Friday afternoon, December 13th.

According to the state Civil Defense, among the dead are a boy less than two years old in the Vila Paulista neighborhood; and, in Vila Britânia, a woman of 51 years and two boys, 13 and 5 years. Seven survivors were rescued by the Fire Department.

The Civil Defense and the firefighters continue the work at the site of the landslide in Vila Britânia, which is isolated waiting for the analysis of technicians from the Institute of Technological Research (IPT) and the Geological Institute (IG). Two houses were closed in the neighborhood and 15 residents went to relatives’ houses.

The government of the state of São Paulo sent reinforcements to assist in the searches and the Eagle helicopter of the Military Police is available for support in the inspections.

According to the Civil Defense, as more rain is predicted, the teams will assess nearby locations for security.
