Elevator Collapses, Leaves Four Dead in Santos, São Paulo State

SÃO PAULO, BRAZIL – The collapse of an elevator left four people dead on Monday night, December 30th, in Santos, on the south coast of São Paulo.

According to the Fire Department, the service equipment crashed from the 9th floor. The Navy reported that the building is a housing unit for military personnel from the São Paulo Port Authority who work in the city and the victims would be the wife and three other relatives of a military officer.

The accident occurred at around 8 PM in the ‘Tiffany’ residential building, consisting of nine floors and located on Guararapes Street, near the Stadium of Vila Belmiro, Santos Football Club. The names of the victims have not been released.

Experts from the Civil Police were in the building, in addition to teams from the fire department, the State Police, the Civil Defense of Santos and the Mobile Emergency Assistance Service (SAMU).

“The Captain and staff of the São Paulo Port Authority convey their condolences to the victims’ family and friends for their invaluable loss. The Navy is providing all possible support to the families. The respective police-military inquiry will be opened in order to determine what happened,” the Navy added in a press release.
