São Paulo Football Club Organizes Project to Help Former Athletes in Need

SÃO PAULO, BRAZIL – São Paulo Football Club is progressing in the development of a project that helps former soccer players who have made a name playing for the club and are experiencing financial difficulties. The announcement was made yesterday afternoon by former striker Mineiro, who scored the goal of the 2005 world club title.

The São Paulo Football Club will create an association to raise funds and help players who have made history for the club and who are now experiencing critical situations.

“The project is well advanced. An association will soon be created to raise funds and help players who have made history for the São Paulo team and who are experiencing critical situations,” said Mineiro, who was at the launch of the Legends Cup Brazil, a four-team master championship to be played in the Morumbi in December.

The initiative is by the football club, but Mineiro is at the head of the organization, for being viewed by the club as someone who can embody the project. The former striker explained how the group intends to help former stars in need.

“A committee of former athletes will be created that will assess each situation, then we will try to provide the support that each player who made history in São Paulo deserves, who by one situation or another ended up forgotten. We’re trying to prevent history from being lost so that former players may lead dignified lives even after their careers have ended,” said Mineiro.

Details on how the funds will be raised have not yet been disclosed, but the trend is for the new São Paulo master team to be instrumental in this initiative. The team will play a tournament with Barcelona, Bayern Munich, and Borussia Dortmund in December at Morumbi, which could be the project’s kick-off.
