Steel Cable in Amusement Park Tears and Causes Injuries in Suburb of Rio de Janeiro

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – The civil police will perform a forensic examination at the Play Kid amusement park, in Praça dos Três Poderes, São João de Meriti, in Baixada Fluminense, where a steel cable burst in one of the rides, on Saturday night, July 6th, leaving several people injured.

The structure collapsed near the base of the ride, causing the chairs to plummet. As the chairs were at a low height, the accident was not more severe.

A young woman was hospitalized. According to relatives, she suffers multiple fractures to her nose and will require surgery.

The Mobile Emergency Care Service (SAMU) was deployed, and the injured were taken to the São João de Meriti Medical Care Center. The remaining injured were X-rayed, examined by orthopedists, and released.

Park visitors said that the ride had been closed to the public last week.

Bom Dia Rio news site tried to reach the administration of Play Kid Diverses park, but no one replied.

The Municipality of São João de Meriti reported that the Play Kid park was operating with all necessary permits (firefighters, civil police, military police, children and youth court) and that it also submitted a technical report attesting to its operational efficiency. The municipality also informed that it is at the disposal of the relevant bodies to whatever may be required.
