Finland Plans to Ban Brazilian Meat Imports into Europe Because of Fires in the Amazon

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – The country occupies the rotating presidency of the European Union. The Finnish Finance Minister Mika Lintila said he “condemns the destruction of the Amazon rainforest.”

Finland, which holds the rotating presidency of the European Union (EU), said on Friday 23rd, that it intends to find a way to make the bloc ban the import of Brazilian meat because of the devastation caused by fires in the Amazon.

“Finance Minister Mika Lintila condemns the destruction of the Amazon rainforest and suggests that the EU and Finland should urgently review the possibility of banning imports of Brazilian beef,” the Finnish Finance Ministry said in a statement.

Also on Friday, France threatened to oppose the agreement between Mercosur and the European Union.

French President Emmanuel Macron’s office accused Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro of lying during the G20 meeting in Osaka, Japan, by minimizing concerns about climate change.
