Brazil’s Government Plans to Build Six Nuclear Power Plants by 2050

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – The construction of the plants should be included in the National Energy Plan (PNE), which is in its final stages of preparation. In a statement, the ministry noted that the PNE includes estimated investments of US$30 (R$120) billion in the construction of the six plants.

The new reactors are expected to produce 6 gigawatts (GW) of energy – 1 GW each. Added to the existing production of the Andrade 1 and 2 plants and that of Angra 3, which is expected to be completed in 2026, the power installed in the nuclear grid could reach 9.3 GW.

“The PNE helps the federal government develop its strategy to expand the energy supply in the long term. The Decennial Energy Plan, which has a 10-year timeframe, is a short-term planning instrument and is being produced to cover the period 2019-2029. In the latter, only the operation of Angra 3 is expected to begin”, adds the Ministry of Mines and Energy.
