Brazil: 41% negatively evaluate the work of the Federal Supreme Court

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – A PoderData survey conducted from June 19 to 21 shows that the work of the Federal Supreme Court (STF) ministers is rated as “bad” or “terrible” by 41% of those interviewed.

Those who consider the Court’s performance “regular” are 33%, while 24% evaluate the Supreme Court as “good” or “great”.

The rate of those who approve of the Supreme Court’s work oscillated above the margin of error of two percentage points. It was 20% in the survey conducted from March 27 to 29.

Compared to the House (12%) and the Senate (9%), the STF has maintained the best positive evaluation among the Powers since the end of March 2021, when the question about the work of the National Congress was asked for the first time by PoderData.

In the current government's approval range, 66% negatively evaluate the work of the Supreme Court justices. The percentage of "good/very good" is only 13%.

The worst evaluation of the Supreme Court was recorded in the round from March 29 to 31, 2021, the same month in which Minister Edson Fachin determined the annulment of all decisions made by the 13th Court of Curitiba in the criminal proceedings against former president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (Workers’ Party – PT). Then, the STF’s performance was considered “bad” or “terrible” by 42% and “good” or “excellent” by 16%.

The survey was carried out by PoderData, a company of the Poder360 Jornalismo group. Data were collected from June 19 to 21, 2022, through calls to cell phones and landlines.

There were 3,000 interviews in 302 cities in 27 states. The margin of error is two percentage points. The confidence interval is 95%.

CROSS WITH GOVERNMENT APPROVAL

Among those interviewed who disapprove of the Bolsonaro administration, 35% evaluate the work of the STF as “good/very good”, while 24% consider it “bad/very bad”.

In the current government’s approval range, 66% negatively evaluate the work of the Supreme Court justices. The percentage of “good/very good” is only 13%.

To arrive at this result, PoderData crossed the data from the questions “in general, how do you evaluate the work of the STF, the Supreme Federal Court?” and “do you approve or disapprove of Jair Bolsonaro’s government?
