The city ranked fourth among municipalities with over 250,000 inhabitants, behind only Santos, Niterói and Blumenau. As these are small municipalities when compared to Rio, one can say that the city ranks first among large Brazilian cities.

This is the fourth year of the ISLU index, developed by the National Union of Urban Cleaning Companies (SELUR) and PwC Brasil, analyzing four criteria: population engagement, financial sustainability, recovery of collected waste, and environmental impact.

Rio de Janeiro was the first city to comply with the PNRS, with the closing of the Gramacho landfill and the inauguration of the waste treatment enter CTR-Rio in the neighboring town of Seropédica, combining state-of-the-art technology, unprecedented in Latin America.

ISLU 2019 was introduced during a seminar on Solid Waste and Circular Economy, at Museu do Amanhã, in Rio de Janeiro.
