Pensioner Dies After Being Shot by Stray Bullet in Niterói

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – A 71-year-old pensioner was shot dead by a stray bullet in the Fonseca neighborhood of Niterói (Rio Metropolitan Region) on Friday morning, October 4th.

The State Police were exchanging shots with criminals in the Santo Cristo favela, close to the elderly man’s place of residence. By Friday night, the shot’s source was unknown.

According to the State Police, Geraldo Evaristo de Souza was repairing his car outside his house when he was shot in the back by a stray bullet. He was rushed to Hospital Estadual Azevedo Lima, in the same neighborhood, but died.

Two suspects were also shot, arrested and taken to the same hospital, where they are hospitalized in custody. A 556-caliber rifle was seized from them. The case was reported to the 78th Police Department (Fonseca).

On Friday, four other people were shot by stray bullets in the metropolitan area of Rio de Janeiro. Early in the morning, a 43-year-old woman was shot while watching TV in her living room on Oswaldo Cruz street in the Nova Cidade neighborhood.

Patricia dos Santos Costa was rushed to the São Gonçalo Emergency Room and is not in danger, according to the health unit.

Three other people – two children and a woman – were shot by stray bullets during an operation conducted by the State Police in the Dique Slum in Vigário Geral, in the northern zone of Rio de Janeiro, on Friday afternoon.

All were assisted and taken to the Getúlio Vargas State Hospital, in Penha (north zone).
