RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – The Galeria Evandro Carneiro Arte, in Gávea, Rio de Janeiro, will be hosting the “Nossos Naïfs Brasileiros” exhibition from August 17th to September 14th. The show includes forty paintings by various artists.

The exhibition features the works “O Parque” by JMS (Júlio Martins da Silva), “Mocinha lendo Carolina” by Elza de Oliveira Souza, “A Sanfoneira” by Miranda, among others. The pieces belonged to Lucien Finkelstein’s collection and are for sale.
To discover ingenuity, simplicity, openness, freedom, the whole colorful and special, tropical, hot, seductive, just like the Brazilian people’s joy of life, is to find the essence of our naïve’s paintings.
These artists, endowed with a natural plastic sense, do not accept being labeled, do not attach themselves to rules or fads, and do not allow themselves to be influenced by the current trends.
Brazil is among the five greats of naïve art in the world, together with France, Haïti, former Yugoslavia, and Italy. Here we find an enormous number of artists, and every day this number grows.
It is said that naïve art appears in the early days of humankind, that our ancestors may have been the first naïve painters. Because through rock painting, on the walls of their caves, they eternalized their tracks, parts of their daily lives, their hunting, communicating and inventing a language to express themselves and leave it on record.
“Douanier” Rousseau was the exponent of modern naïve art. In the late nineteenth and early twentieth century, he produced the most beautiful and exotic forests, vegetation and animals, which, to the amazement of the great masters of the time, he said he found right there, in a garden near where he lived.
