Rio de Janeiro Government Launches Tender to Expand Angra dos Reis Airport

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – The State Government, through the Secretary of State for Transport, started the bidding process for the extension works of Angra dos Reis Airport. The public notice announcing the call for companies interested in the contract was published in the Official Gazette on Friday, August 14th. The bidding process is expected to be completed in October.

The works, which involve investments of R$29 million by the Ministry of Infrastructure, are expected to be completed by the end of 2021. The airport project – managed by the state government and under concession to Angra Aeroportos – involves the extension of the landing and take-off runway and the aircraft yard, the building of a new air taxiway and night beaconing.

“The airport improvements will allow Angra dos Reis Airport to serve a wider public, hosting medium-sized aircraft, for 40 passengers. Currently, it accommodates aircraft with up to 18 passengers. The implementation of commercial flights, with accessible prices, will encourage tourism in Costa Verde,” said Governor Wilson Witzel.

The new project includes a complete redesign of the infrastructure, as well as the installation of modern equipment that ensures greater safety, such as the automatic weather station, the first in the country, provided by the federal government.

“The works have been awaited for 20 years and will increase the airport’s operational potential. The completion of these improvements should be announced by the end of the year and will rely on the support promised by the federal government for the building of a new and modern passenger terminal,” said Delmo Pinho, the Secretary of Transports.
