RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – A landslide in the upper part of the Mangueira favela in the north zone of Rio de Janeiro affected 12 homes in the early hours of August 7th. According to the city government, the Operations Center activated teams from the Civil Defense, Social Assistance, the Geotechnical Institute Foundation (Geo-Rio) and the Municipal Urban Cleaning Company (COMLURB) around 4:20 AM.
The Civil Defense has isolated the affected area and the teams are waiting for COMLURB [the city sanitation company] to remove the debris in order to assess the homes’ structural condition. In total, 20 agents from the Civil Defense, the Municipal Guard and the Municipal Department of Public Order have been deployed.
The 12 displaced families are being supported by the Social Assistance Secretariat. To date, there is no information on wounded.
As it has not rained in recent days, the assumption is that a pipe burst and leaked water on the site, soaking the soil that eventually slid.
