Brazil incorporates two simulators to train Gripen pilots and technicians

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – Saab has delivered two F-39 Gripen E fighter simulators and other training materials and equipment to the Brazilian Air Force. The so-called Mission Trainers, with integrated cupola and cockpit, were installed at the Anápolis Air Base in Goiás state.

This technology will be used for pilot training in the initiation phase and operational improvement using advanced tactical scenarios. With the two connected equipment, it is possible to perform formation flying training when two or more aircraft fly close to each other, with the same bow and speed.

Operations support equipment used by pilots and maintenance personnel includes mission planning and evaluation systems, digital data processing software such as the digital map generation system, and data link and communications planning systems.

The mission trainers also have a ground maintenance support system for technician training, which manages the aircraft maintenance data that is analyzed and stored.

These are supported by a virtual instructor, who can project a 3D image of the Gripen from various angles, allowing details to be magnified and visualized.

Technicians can interact with the aircraft image to, for example, simulate the installation of a component or the opening of a maintenance window.

In addition, the technical manuals are fully interactive and integrated into the same system, allowing information to be searched more quickly and efficiently. A computer-based training (CBT) system, divided into classes, is also included.

“This is an important part of the contract implementation. The support and training systems are essential to train the teams and support the program. Our responsibility is to deliver complete and functional systems and conduct training on the use and maintenance of the devices,” maintained Daniel Rydja, Saab’s Support, and Training Program Manager.

The FAB has been preparing the Anapolis Air Base (BAAN) to receive the Gripen support systems. Recently, it celebrated the inauguration of the new 1st Air Defense Group (1st GDA) building, the first major structure built specifically for Gripen operation.

The new 1st GDA building in BAAN symbolizes a concrete milestone in the operation of the F-39 Gripen vector in the country.
