Woman Suspected of Uterine Tumor Gave Birth to Quintuplets in Paraná State

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – A woman gave birth to quintuplets on Monday night, September 2nd, in Campo Largo, in the metropolitan region of Curitiba. The children were born premature, at 28 weeks, according to the family.

The pregnancy of Anieli Camargo Kurpel, 24 years old, happened naturally. The couple says they had been trying to have a child since the end of 2018.

Anieli already has a six-year-old son called Davi, from another relationship. On the other hand, Luis Fernando is a father for the first time.

Before discovering that she was pregnant with quintuplets, the young woman was told in a doctor’s consultation that there was suspicion that she might have an ovarian cyst or a uterine tumor.

Anieli and her husband, Luis Fernando Araújo, 33, live in Chopinzinho, in the southwest of Paraná. The quintuplets were discovered at the beginning of April, during an ultrasound examination.

For being considered a risky pregnancy, the young woman needed constant care during gestation.

In July, she was taken to the Hospital do Rocio, in the metropolitan region of Curitiba, where she waited for the birth of her children.

All babies were born weighing more than one kilo, except for little Laura, who came into the world at just over 900 grams.

After delivery, the babies were taken to incubators in the hospital’s intensive care nit, where they must remain until they gain weight. There is no forecast for their discharge as yet.

After learning about the pregnancy, the couple decided to run a virtual campaign to raise funds to care for the children. Anieli had been fired from her job weeks before she found out she was pregnant.

On social media, the couple created an account named “Quintuplos do Paraná” (“Paraná’s Quintuplets”), which had over 18,000 followers by Tuesday, September 3rd.

The two also set up a “virtual fundraiser”, with the goal of raising R$40,000 for the purchase of clothes, diapers and other items for the newborns.
