RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – The best-rated federative unit in the Northeast had good results in the Public Safety, Fiscal Solidity and Innovation categories.

In the Public Safety category, the federative unit stepped out of its underprivileged position of being one of the most violent in the country in 2015, to climb to 4th place, behind only São Paulo, Santa Catarina and Mato Grosso do Sul.

Safety is a public service that clearly reflects the operation of a state’s institutions; it is a crucial element for the establishment of order and the protection of individual rights, and it is vital for development.

In other aspects, such as Fiscal Solidity and Innovation, Paraíba achieved a considerable increase in its position compared to the last few years, ranking seventh in both areas.

Significantly, modern economic theory regards innovation as the key to long-term economic growth and development, since it promotes productivity gains that are essential for the promotion of robust economic growth.

Negative points

However, the State also faces some challenges, such as in Human Capital and Market Potential aspects, dropping seven and six positions respectively.

Paraíba also showed a drop in areas such as Education (down 2 positions), Public Machine Efficiency (down 3 positions) and Infrastructure (down 8 positions).
