RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – On Wednesday, March 17th, President Jair Bolsonaro welcomed the Paraguayan Foreign Minister Euclides Acevedo, who traveled to Brazil to request help in fighting the Covid-19 pandemic in the neighboring country.
Earlier, Acevedo was welcomed by Foreign Minister Ernesto Araújo for an official audience at the Itamaraty Palace. Details about the type of assistance that has been requested have not been disclosed.

A little less than two weeks ago, Paraguay was the stage for demonstrations against the way the country’s government has been handling the pandemic. The events saw clashes between police and demonstrators, and then Health Minister Julio Mazzoleni resigned from his post. The opposition is also calling for the impeachment of President Mario Abdo Benitez.

Currently, Paraguay, with a population of almost 7 million, registers 183,000 confirmed infections and some 3,500 covid-19 deaths.
