Carlos Slim puts his New York mansion up for sale at US$80 million

Mexican businessman Carlos Slim put his mansion on New York’s Upper East Side up for sale for US$80 million.

The mansion, known as the Benjamin N. Duke House, has 25 rooms, eight bedrooms and 10 bathrooms, according to the StreetEasy portal.

It was built between 1899 and 1901 by the Welch, Smith & Provot firm inspired by Renaissance palaces with Beaux Arts style details.

“It is a rare opportunity to acquire a piece of history and make a bold statement in your portfolio,” according to the description of the property being sold by real estate agent Jorge López.

The mansion overlooks Central Park and The Metropolitan Museum of Art (MET).

News of the sale was first reported by the New York Post.

The publication points out that if the operation is completed at the proposed price, it would set a record for a mansion in the Big Apple.

The house was acquired by the magnate behind América Móvil and Grupo Carso in 2010 for US$44 million from businessman Tamir Sapir.

Before passing to Sapir in 2006, the mansion was in the hands of the Duke family. Slim, 82, had already tried to put it up for sale in 2015.

To acquire the house, an initial payment of US$16 million is considered, the rest could be financed through a 30-year mortgage that would imply a monthly payment of US$401,162, we must add to that the monthly property taxes that each month represent US$ $23,000.
