RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – Brazilian tennis pair Laura Pigossi and Luisa Stefani won the bronze medal in the women’s doubles competition at the Tokyo Olympic Games on Friday after defeating Russia’s Veronika Kudermétova and Elena Vesniná.
The Brazilians defeated the Russians by two sets to one (4-6, 6-4, 11-9) after losing the first set with a break of their first and last serve, in both cases with Stefani on serve.
In the second set, Pigossi and Stefani improved their service and managed to break Kudermétova-Vesniná’s serve right from the start and hold their advantage till the end, setting up the closely fought tie-break set, which they won by eleven points to nine.
