Uruguay adds 44 deaths and 2,269 new Covid-19 cases (May 12)

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – This Wednesday, May 12, Uruguay added 44 deaths and registered 2,269 new cases of Covid-19 after processing 14,806 tests, according to the daily report issued by the National Emergency System (Sinae). The most affected department (province) was Montevideo, with 24 of the 44 deaths.

Uruguay now has 228,102 cases diagnosed with coronavirus since the beginning of the pandemic, of which 25,928 are people who are suffering from the disease, 525 of these admitted to intensive care units (ICU), and 3,252 have died.

In terms of new cases, the capital city was also the most affected with 923, while Canelones was in second place with 276 positive cases.

According to the daily report presented by the Uruguayan Society of Intensive Care Medicine, 76.3% of the 1,021 beds in ICU are currently occupied, and 52.7% of these are due to coronavirus cases.

At this moment, 18 of the 19 departments of the country are in the red zone according to the Harvard index, having accumulated more than 25 cases per 100,000 inhabitants in the last seven days.

The only one outside these is Flores with 24.26, while the most affected department is Salto with 169.66, followed by Tacuarembó with 108.76.

With respect to vaccination, 1,253,088 people have been inoculated with first doses from the Chinese pharmaceutical company Sinovac, the Anglo-Swedish company AstraZeneca and the U.S. company Pfizer. Another 876,578 people have already received the second dose from Pfizer and Sinovac. This means that 35.74% of the population has received the first dose and 25% the second.

Last Sunday, 80,730 doses of Pfizer arrived in Uruguay on a flight from the United States, while 1,000,000 doses of CoronaVac arrived on Saturday.
