Peru: Boluarte insists she will not resign

Peru’s president, Dina Boluarte, has again ruled out that she will leave office, affirming that with her resignation, “the crisis does not end”.

At the same time, new mobilizations and protests are planned for this Wednesday in several cities, including Lima.

“We will continue doing management. My resignation does not end the crisis; my resignation does not accelerate absolutely nothing, not even the space of time to be able to call for early elections,” she said during his visit this Wednesday to Arequipa to see the devastation left by landslides in the region.

“We are not going to stop in that situation. Let the Congress and the corresponding commission resolve it,” said the Peruvian president, thus urging institutions that are unable to agree on the date for new elections, one of the demonstrators’ demands.

Boluarte explained that she feels legitimized to remain president until the new elections are called because “the vast majority of the population” does not want her resignation, but only “the group” of people who are demonstrating, who are mainly supporters of the left-wing benches.

Before a demonstration called for Thursday, February 9, by the General Confederation of Peruvian Workers (CGTP), Boluarte asked the union to let her work and encouraged them to sit down to negotiate.
