Ecuador’s Attorney General receives death threat from an armed group

Ecuadorian Attorney General Diana Salazar received a death threat on Thursday (1) from an armed group of hooded men through a video sent to her cell phone.

The Attorney General’s Office condemned the situation through a statement on social networks where it shared a screenshot of the messages sent to her through the WhatsApp messaging application.

The agency indicated that, in recent hours, direct threats to the official and her family “have escalated”, so it condemned “all attempts of intimidation that are given by the unrestricted fulfillment of constitutional powers”.

“The Attorney General’s Office calls on the citizens, the international community, and the State, in general, to remain vigilant against any attempt to take over this institution by any means and at any cost,” it stressed.

Ecuadorian President Guillermo Lasso expressed his support and solidarity with the attorney through his Twitter account, where he also assured that the National Police would give her all the necessary protection.

Citizen groups are investigating the official for the alleged plagiarism of an undergraduate thesis, which she has rejected under the argument that they seek to prevent her permanence in office.
