The Nicaraguan National Assembly on Wednesday (10) approved the repeal of Decree 357, which created the Red Cross in 1958, and at the same time passed a law that creates a legal successor to that institution.
However, this will now be placed under the Ministry of Health.
The explanatory memorandum to the decree submitted by lawmakers stressed that the Red Cross violated its rules by failing to act neutrally and impartially during the 2018 anti-regime protests.
That day was described by the government as a failed coup, according to pro-government media.
In addition, lawmakers pointed out that the Red Cross did not submit financial reports or verify its donors’ identity.
The Interior Ministry’s register was not up to date.
Under the new law, all Red Cross assets will be confiscated by the state and transferred to the administration of this new decentralized institution of the Ministry of Health.
