Domestic violence and sexual assaults are the most reported crimes in Bolivia in 2022

The Bolivian Prosecutor General’s Office reported today, Friday, that crimes related to domestic violence and sexual assaults were the most reported crimes in 2022 in the Andean country.

In compliance with the Political Constitution of the State, the National Policy of Transparency and Fight against Corruption, and laws in force in the country, the Prosecutor General of Bolivia, Juan Lanchipa, developed the Final Accountability 2022 in which he exposed the results, technological modernization, cases handled and the transformations achieved by the institution.

He explained that in 2022 the Public Prosecutor’s Office received 156,110 cases nationwide, and the total caseload was 292,427 cases that had been carried over from 2021.

“The highest incidence of crime continues to be family or domestic violence,” he emphasized.

He specified that there are 51,307 processes related to violence against women and minors and that the most reported crime was family or domestic violence.

They reported 39,335 cases for that reason, 5 percent more than in 2021.

There were also 3,014 cases of rape, which implies an increase of 23 percent in 2022, 3,550 cases of sexual abuse with a 21 percent increase, 2,837 cases of rape of minors with a 20 percent increase, and 1,729 reports of statutory rape with a 6 percent increase.

He expressed his concern that the high number of femicides, which reached 100 in 2022, is not decreasing.

The Public Prosecutor’s Office report details that 94 feminicides and 38 infanticides were registered last year.

Lanchipa said that in the case of femicide victims, 87 perpetrators were identified and 49 convictions were handed down last year.

Another worrying aspect, the prosecutor said, is the 15,780 cases involving adolescents in crimes, but the “most recurrent” are rape and domestic violence.

The Prosecutor’s Office also dealt with 1,110 cases of human trafficking and smuggling last year.

Meanwhile, there were 5,900 corruption cases, 2,485 drug trafficking cases, and 248 environmental cases.

The authority highlighted the results of the conciliation units in all departmental prosecutors’ offices by signing conciliation agreements with a restorative justice approach. In 2022, 5,448 conciliatory agreements were reached.

He also reported that 638 disciplinary complaints were dealt with throughout the country, of which 123 resulted in sanctions, 56 of which led to the dismissal of prosecutors for very serious misconduct.
