Bolivia dismisses former President Goni’s proposal to return and reform

The Bolivian administration has rebuffed an overture from ex-president Gonzalo Sanchez de Lozada, known as Goni, to revert to the Republic structure.

The government believes that the Plurinational State, introduced by previous president Evo Morales, has led to substantial progress, stated UN Ambassador Diego Pary.

Goni’s bid, termed retrograde by Pary, falls short of contributing to Bolivia’s cultural, religious, political, and economic diversity advancements.

Goni, residing in the U.S. since his 2003 resignation amidst the “Gas War” protests, proposed to revise the Political Constitution, introduce a Prime Minister role, and shift the government base back to Sucre.

President Luis Arce also dismissed Goni’s proposition, emphasizing that a return to the Republic could result in limited privilege and potential damage to democracy.

Arce mentioned Goni’s alleged role in the 2003 conflict, resulting in numerous deaths, and his current fugitive status in Bolivia.

Victims of the “Gas War”, when Goni tried to export gas to the United States through Chile, are seeking redress in the U.S. legal system.

The Bolivian authorities have consistently urged the U.S. to extradite Goni to hold him responsible for the 2003 incident.
