WHO Alert: “We are Not Even Halfway Through the Pandemic, Rather at the Start”

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – Another press conference was held on Tuesday, September 16th, at the World Health Organization‘s (WHO) headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland. Live to the whole world, David Nabarro, an expert in the organization, alerted that the pandemic is far from ending.

“It is far worse than any science fiction pandemic. This is very serious – we’re not even halfway there. We’re at the start of this pandemic,” the expert said in reaction to a member of the British Parliament on the UK’s Foreign Affairs Committee.

According to David Nabarro, we are also only now “beginning to see” the long-term consequences that Covid-19 will cause in the world. “It’s becoming increasingly horrific. As we proceed to this stage, we can see this situation, in particular, across Europe, where the novel virus is returning,” he stressed.

Reiterating that this is “a terrible situation”, the expert also reflected: “A health issue that has grown so much out of our control that it is leading the world, not only into a recession, but into a huge economic contraction that will probably double the number of people living in poverty, which will double the number of those who are undernourished and drive hundreds of millions of small businesses into bankruptcy”.

The Covid-19 pandemic has already caused at least 929,391 deaths and over 29.3 million infections in 196 countries and territories, according to a report published yesterday by the AFP French news agency.
