Vaccination: Brazil Ranks 8th in Absolute Terms and 34th Proportionally

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – Over 94 million doses have been administered worldwide and just over two million in Brazil. In absolute figures, this places the country among the eight that have vaccinated the most, although less than 1% of the population has been immunized to date.

Brazil is placed 34th in the vaccination ranking proportional to population in a survey conducted on Monday, February 1st, by the Our World in Data project, linked to the University of Oxford. If absolute figures are considered, the country ranks 8th.

With just over two million vaccines administered, the country has immunized 0.96% of its population with at least one dose, behind Croatia (1.41%) and ahead of Costa Rica (0.90%).

Israel leads the ranking proportional to population: over one-third of Israelis have been administered at least one dose of the anti-Covid-19 vaccine and one-fifth have been fully immunized.

The countries with more people who have been administered at least one dose are Israel (34.74%), the United Arab Emirates (31.18%), the United Kingdom (13.22%) and Bahrain (10.02%).

Absolute figures

Over 94 million doses of Covid-19 vaccines have already been administered worldwide, and Brazil is placed 8th in the ranking of countries that have administered more vaccines in absolute terms.

Brazil has administered just over two million vaccines to date. The United States continues to lead in absolute figures, with 31.12 million doses administered.

The top ten are China (22.77 million), the United Kingdom (9.47 million), Israel (4.74 million), India (3.74 million), the United Arab Emirates (3.33 million), Germany (2.32 million), Brazil (2.07 million), Turkey (1.99 million) and Italy (1.96 million).

Between the 11th and 15th positions are France (1.53 million), Spain (1.47 million), Poland (1.16 million), Russia (1 million) and Canada (937 thousand).

Speed of vaccination

Brazil is also placed 34th in the ranking measuring the speed of vaccination of its population. The country is immunizing 0.10% of its population per day, tied with Austria and Luxembourg.

The Seychelles (2.03%), Israel (1.87%), the United Arab Emirates (1.26%) and the United Kingdom and Serbia (0.58%) lead the survey.

Complete vaccination

The countries with the highest number of completely immunized inhabitants are Israel (19,98%), the United Arab Emirates (2,53%), USA (1,71%), Iceland (1,41%) and Denmark (1,25%).

Despite leading the proportional rankings and vaccination already starting to show results, Israel decided to extend the lockdown for the third time to prevent a new peak of cases and deaths before the majority of its population is immunized.

Unlike the countries leading the proportional vaccination rankings, Brazil began immunizing its population only on January 17th and has not yet administered two doses to anyone (out of clinical trials).

Media outlet consortium

The number of vaccinations in Brazil recorded by Our World in Data (2.07 million) is slightly different from the media outlet consortium’s survey (2.05 million).

The consortium collects information from State and Federal District Health Secretariats on a daily basis, while Our World in Data uses data from a collaborative platform.

Our World in Data is a project of researchers from the University of Oxford and the NGO Global Change Data Lab that monitors public data on the pandemic and other issues of worldwide repercussion.
