Latin America Surpasses 400,000 Deaths Mark by Covid-19 (November 1st)

RIO DE JANEIRO,  BRAZIL – On Sunday, November 1st, Latin America passed the 400,000 deaths mark, which represents almost a third of the total number of deaths in the world, according to a Reuters news agency survey.

The region recorded 402,351 deaths and over 11.3 million coronavirus cases on Monday, November 2nd. The first 200,000 coronavirus deaths in Latin America had been recorded on August 2nd.

This means that in only three months the number of victims in the region doubled. Although the number is daunting, daily deaths in Latin America stand at 1,600, according to the seven-day rolling average – or just over half of the 3,100 daily deaths recorded in July, at the peak of the pandemic, according to Reuters’ count based on official government data.

The countries with the highest death rates by Covid-19 in Latin America are, in decreasing order: Brazil, Mexico, Peru, Colombia and Argentina.

Brazil passed the 160,000 death mark by coronavirus on Sunday, according to a survey released at 8 PM by the media outlet consortium.

In terms of confirmed cases, a total of 5,544,815 Brazilians have been or are infected with the novel coronavirus since the start of the pandemic, with 10,084 of these confirmed on Monday, November 2nd – The Day of the Dead in many Latin American countries.

In August, Peru became the country with the highest mortality rate for Covid-19 of the 20 countries most affected by the virus, according to Johns Hopkins University.
