Covid-19: Brazil Records 24,800 New Cases and 497 Deaths in 24 Hours (October 22nd)

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – Health authorities have reported 24,858 new cases and another 497 deaths from Covid-19 in 24 hours. The data were collected by the state health secretariats and included in the Ministry of Health’s daily update released on Thursday, October 22nd.

With the increase, the country reached 155,900 deaths caused by the novel coronavirus. There are still 2,408 deaths under investigation.

The number of cases since the start of the pandemic has reached 5,323,630. Up to Wednesday, the Ministry of Health’s system had recorded 5,298,772 cumulative cases of the disease.

Currently, 388,435 patients are under follow-up. According to the Ministry of Health, 4,779,295 people have already recovered from the disease, corresponding to 89.8 percent of the total number of infections.

Covid-19 in the States

The balance released yesterday by the State Health Secretariat notes that the state of São Paulo has confirmed 1,076,939 cases of the novel coronavirus, with 38,482 deaths to date. From the total diagnosed cases, 965,420 people have now recovered.

The total number of people currently hospitalized in the state, for suspected or confirmed cases of Covid-19, stands at 7,185. Of this total, 3,165 people are hospitalized in a critical condition. The ICU bed occupancy rate stands at 40.1 percent in the state and 40.2 percent in Greater São Paulo.

As a result of the drop in the ICU bed occupancy rate in the state, the São Paulo Transplant Center on Wednesday authorized the resumption of elective corneal surgeries in the state, establishing safety and prevention protocols for Covid-19. Currently, 3,583 people are waiting for corneas.

Following São Paulo, the states with the highest number of deaths caused by the novel coronavirus are Rio de Janeiro (20,021), Ceará (9,243), Minas Gerais (8,621) and Pernambuco (8,527). The States with fewest cases are Acre (685), Roraima (690), Amapá (738), Tocantins (1,072), and Mato Grosso do Sul (1,524).
