Covid-19: Brazil Counts Over 5.35 Million Cases, 156,400 Deaths (October 23rd)

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – The number of people infected with the novel coronavirus since the start of the pandemic has reached 5,353,656 in Brazil. In the last 24 hours, 30,026 new cases have been recorded.

The number of deaths due to Covid-19 now stands at 156,471. There are still 2,374 deaths under investigation.

A total of 399,313 cases are still under follow-up. According to the Ministry of Health, 4,797,872 people have already recovered from the disease.

The data are included in the Ministry of Health’s daily update, released on Friday evening, October 23rd. The report is made based on records compiled by the state Health Secretariats and forwarded to the portfolio for consolidation.

Yesterday, the body also released the Epidemiological Report, which showed a drop in both cases and deaths when compared to the preceding week.

States

The states with the highest number of deaths are São Paulo (38,608), Rio de Janeiro (20,115), Ceará (9,244), Minas Gerais (8,686), and Pernambuco (8,531). With Friday’s figures, Minas Gerais passed the state of Pernambuco and became the fourth in terms of number of deaths in the country. The states with the fewest cases are Acre (686), Roraima (691), Amapá (740), Tocantins (1,078), and Mato Grosso do Sul (1,538).

São Paulo

The state of São Paulo records 1,083,641 confirmed cases of the novel coronavirus. Among the diagnosed cases, 965,971 people have already recovered from the disease.

Currently, there are 7,106 people hospitalized throughout the state with suspected or confirmed cases of the novel coronavirus. Of this total, 3,128 people are hospitalized in intensive care units (ICU). The ICU bed occupancy rate in the state is currently the lowest since the start of the novel coronavirus pandemic: 39.9 percent. In Greater São Paulo, the rate stands at 40.2 percent.
