Brazil Records 51,407 Deaths from Coronavirus, 748 in 24 Hours (June 22nd)

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – Brazil recorded 748 new deaths from the novel coronavirus in 24 hours, according to a survey conducted by a media outlet consortium with the State Health Secretariats. There were 51,407 deaths from Covid-19 by Monday, June 22nd.

The data, as established at 8 PM:

  • 51,407 deaths; it was 50,659 until 8 PM on Sunday, June 21st, a difference of 748 deaths;
  • 1,111,348 confirmed cases; it was 1,086,990 by Sunday night, which means there were 24,358 new cases.

Brazil currently counts more confirmed cases of the disease than Russia and India combined, the 3rd and 4th countries in number of cases in the world, according to data compiled by Johns Hopkins University, and is second only to the US in the number of patients – and also deaths.

Consortium of media outlets

The data released on Wednesday, June 17th, were obtained after a partnership between G1, O Globo, Extra, O Estado de S.Paulo, Folha de S.Paulo, and UOL, began to work together from June 8th to collect the required data from all 26 states and the Federal District.

On Monday, June 22nd, the ministry released a new balance. According to the portfolio, there were 654 new deaths and 21,432 new cases, totaling 51,271 deaths and 1,106,470 cases since the start of the pandemic – figures lower than those found by the consortium.
