Brazil Records 1,039 Deaths in 24 Hours; Total Mortality Climbs to 24,512 (May 26th)

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – Brazil recorded 1,039 new deaths caused by Covid-19 in the last 24 hours, which increased the total number of deaths from the disease to 24,512 in the country, according to a report released on Tuesday evening, May 26th, by the Ministry of Health. Between Monday and Tuesday, 16,324 new cases of infection by the novel coronavirus were recorded and now there are 391,222 people infected.

Of the total number of deaths confirmed yesterday, only 284 occurred in the last three days. The remainder occurred in a prior period, but have only now been confirmed. The Ministry reported that another 3,882 deaths are under investigation for suspected Covid-19.

The state of São Paulo continues to lead in the number of cases (86,017) and deaths (6,423) due to the disease; followed by Rio de Janeiro (40,024 cases and 4,361 deaths) and Ceará (37,021 cases and 2,603 deaths).

Brazil continues to rank second among the nations with the most Covid-19 cases in the world, second only to the United States, which accounts for over 1.6 million people infected, according to data compiled by the Johns Hopkins University platform by 7 PM on Tuesday. In the list of countries with the most deaths, Brazil ranks 6th. It is only behind the United States (98,717), the United Kingdom (37,130), Italy (32,955), France (28,533), and Spain (27,117).

Worldwide, Covid-19 has already infected 5.5 million people, causing the death of 348,000 of them, according to Johns Hopkins University data. After the outbreak in China in December, which peaked in Europe and the United States in March and April, South America is now considered the epicenter of the disease by the World Health Organization (WHO).

Earlier, the University of Washington’s projection of Covid-19 spread in Brazil and updated on Monday, April 25th, estimates that the country will register 125,833 deaths by early August. On May 12th, when the statistical model began to cover Brazil, the projection was that the country would record 88,000 deaths by August 4th. In two weeks, however, the assessment included data from more states and shows that the Brazilian situation has worsened.
