Starlink expands its operations in Latin America through partnership with Telefónica

SpaceX’s satellite initiative, Starlink, led by Elon Musk, is broadening its footprint in Latin America.

Their latest collaboration is with Telefónica, the parent company of Vivo in Brazil.

Through Telefónica Global Solutions (TGS), Starlink will offer internet connectivity in rural and remote regions.

This partnership allows Telefónica to provide fixed-line and mobile connection services in places typically hard to reach, including moving vehicles.

Operations have already commenced in Mexico, with a phased expansion to countries like Brazil, Peru, Ecuador, Colombia, Chile, the Dominican Republic, and even Spain.

Introduced in early 2023, this Starlink venture aims to collaborate with authorized dealers like Telefónica, targeting business clients with enhanced corporate services and vehicle-specific connectivity devices.

Established in 2019, Starlink’s mission is to deliver high-speed, low-latency internet to remote locations, powered by a global satellite constellation orbiting Earth at low altitudes.

SpaceX’s satellite internet service made its debut in Brazil last year, initially in the southern regions. The alliance with Vivo seeks to amplify this coverage.

With the satellite sector undergoing significant changes, Telefónica Global Solutions brings in-depth expertise in value-added satellite solutions.

Collaborating with Starlink Enterprise, the goal is to offer next-gen solutions to clients, striving for speeds nearing 350 Mbit/s, even in challenging weather conditions.

The Starlink project foresees taking 42,000 satellites to the Earth’s orbit, of which 1,800 have already been sent.

The goal is to offer high-speed Internet to regions where fiber optics, even with the advent of 5G, should not be reached due to the cost of infrastructure.
