Saudi Arabia Clears Brazilian Slaughterhouses for Meat Exports

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – Saudi Arabia’s Food and Drug Authority – SFDA – has cleared eight Brazilian slaughterhouses for beef and byproducts exports to the Arab country, Brazil’s Ministry of Agriculture said Monday, November 11th.

The measure is the result of negotiations initiated by the Minister of Agriculture, Tereza Cristina, during a visit in September, and follows President Jair Bolsonaro’s recent trip to the country.

“This is part of negotiations that the Agriculture Ministry has been undertaking together with the federal government,” Tereza Cristina said in a statement.

Fortefrigo, Better Beef, Rio Grande Ltda, Plena, Supremo, Frigol, Maxi Beef and Distriboi are the companies now authorized to ship the product to the Saudis.

In 2018, exports of Brazilian agricultural products to Saudi Arabia yielded US$1.7 billion. In terms of volume, it was more than 2.9 million tons.

Chicken meat represented 47.4 percent of the total sales value (US$804 million and 486,000 tons).

The main products exported to the Saudis are fresh chicken meat, raw cane sugar, fresh beef, soybeans and bran, corn, refined sugar, and soluble and green coffee.
