RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – The president of the Evangelical Parliamentary Front in Congress, Deputy Silas Câmara, released a note calling for the reopening of temples, which implies a crowding of people, an extremely risky situation due to the coronavirus. Deputies argue they need prayers to counter the “evil pandemic“.
“We know that the Church is a place of refuge for many who feel frightened and desperate. That is why, at this time of such distress, it is crucial that temples, with the proper preventive measures in place, are open to welcome the suffering and the desperate,” said the deputies. “We believe that faith is a powerful ally in this critical moment for the nation, so we cannot limit it”.
The evangelical caucus further said it “supports unreservedly the decree of the State of Public Calamity” issued by the federal government. The government’s decision allows for the breach of the spending ceiling law.
“We also reaffirm our full willingness to support all the required measures aimed at safeguarding the health of the population, as well as its social and economic stability,” it said in a statement.
The deputies also urged the authorities of the three branches of government, the Executive, the Legislative and the Judiciary, “to set aside any differences and unite in this great battle on behalf of the nation”.
