New DC Comics Wonder Woman Will Be Brazilian

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – Yara Flor, a Brazilian indigenous woman from the Amazon rainforest, will be the new Wonder Woman. The announcement was made by DC Comics on Thursday, October 15th.

In an interview with journalist Jesse Schedeen from IGN website, Jamie S. Rich, editor of DC, confirmed that Yara is from Brazil, but an immigrant in the United States. “Although we see her currently active as Wonder Woman, we will eventually find out her origin – partially from her understanding what that means, where she is from, why she is that, how she relates with Diana [Prince] and with the other amazons,” she said.

Rich also talked about the differences between the new character and the original heroine. “Diana Prince is a goddess, she’s always a little above us. This is a chance to sort of revisit some of Wonder Woman’s early roots when Diana was trying to be human and trying to learn how to be human. Now we’re going in the opposite direction – how does a human learn to be a goddess?”

Yara is part of “Future State,” a new DC saga that will begin to be published in January 2021. The comic books will blend classic and new characters. The Brazilian will be the protagonist of “Future State: Wonder Woman”. She will experience adventures alongside the new Superman, a hero who will be assumed by Jon, Clark Kent’s son.
