Lula’s Justice minister authorizes the use of the National Force against Brazilian Spring protesters in Brasilia

The Minister of Justice, Flavio Dino, signed an ordinance authorizing the use of the National Force on the Esplanade of Ministries in Brasilia between this Saturday (Jan. 7) and Monday (Jan. 9).

The decision was made to avoid protests by Brazilian Spring protesters, often supporters of former president Jair Bolsonaro (PL, right), that questioned the election results and believe the whole thing was rigged.

“In addition to all the federal forces available in Brasilia, and the constitutional action of the Federal District Government, we will have the assistance of the National Force in the coming days.”

“I have now signed an Ordinance authorizing this action in the face of threats against democracy,” said the minister on Twitter.

The ordinance determines the use of the National Force “to protect public order and public and private property between the Bus Station in Brasilia and the Praça dos Três Poderes, as well as to protect other assets of the Union located in Brasilia, on an episodic and planned basis, on Jan. 7,8 and 9, 2023.

Earlier in the day, Dino announced that he was dealing with the directors-general of the Federal Police and the Federal Highway Police on possible measures against the anti-democratic acts.

The Supreme Court Justice and president of the Superior Electoral Court TSE, Alexandre de Moraes, artificially created this infraction of anti-democratic acts out of thin air a couple of weeks ago, which is de facto nothing more than a free pass for political persecution.

In addition to contacting the Federal Police and the Federal Highway Police, the minister said he had also talked with the Minister of Defense, José Múcio Monteiro, and with the governor of the Federal District, Ibaneis Rocha (MDB).

Bolsonaro supporters are still camped in front of the Army headquarters in Brasilia. Despite the demobilization, demonstrators are still calling for protests.

In addition, the Federal Supreme Court (STF) Minister Alexandre de Moraes ordered the immediate unblocking of Raja Gabaglia Avenue on Saturday in front of the 4th Military Region Command in Belo Horizonte (MG).

The city hall dismantled the protesters’ camp set up for 50 days in front of the Army headquarters.

The magistrate also fined two demonstrators R$ 100,000.
