Mozambique Deports One of Brazil’s Most Wanted Drug Traffickers

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – The Mozambican Ministry of the Interior decided to deport Gilberto Aparecido dos Santos, known as “Fuminho”, one of the most wanted drug traffickers by the Brazilian courts, the Mozambican government announced yesterday.

“Upon entering Mozambican territory, citizen Luiz Gomes de Jesus, also known as Gilberto Aparecido dos Santos, failed to comply with the procedures and irregular entry into the country is grounds for administrative deportation,” reads a Ministry of the Interior document released to the press yesterday.

A source cited by the electronic daily ‘Carta de Moçambique’ states that “Fuminho” left Maputo Airport for Brazil in the early hours of yesterday, in a Brazilian Air Force plane under the control of the Federal Police.

“Fuminho”, arrested last Monday in Maputo, had been on the run for 21 years, after having been convicted for drug trafficking, crimes against the property of financial institutions and large logistics companies, as well as for financing the escape of leaders of criminal organizations.

The deportation order from Mozambique further bans “Fuminho” from entering Mozambican territory for a period of no less than ten years.

“An international arrest warrant had been issued by the Brazilian authorities regarding this citizen, duly reported in the Interpol system and executed by the National Criminal Investigation Service”, adds the document.

The Brazilian is also suspected of funding a rescue plan for Marcos Willians Camacho, known as “Marcola”, the top leader of the ‘Primeiro Comando da Capital’ (First Capital Command – PCC), Brazil’s largest criminal faction, currently imprisoned in Brasília.

The uncovering of this rescue plan resulted in Brazil’s President authorizing the deployment of the Armed Forces on the perimeter of the Federal Penitentiary in Brasília last February.

According to the Brazilian press, “Fuminho” escaped from prison in 1998 on the same day that Marcola also escaped, and hid in neighboring countries such as Paraguay and Bolivia before traveling to South Africa on a forged passport.
