Supreme Court Justice Says Lava Jato’s Lead Prosecutor Engages in Petty Corruption

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – In his vote on Thursday afternoon, September 26th, Gilmar Mendes said the embattled Lavao Jato chief prosecutors Deltan Dallagnol engages in petty corruption.

“The fight against corruption is a commitment of us all. But you can’t fight corruption by committing crimes,” he said.

In the judgment of the writ of habeas corpus that could annul 32 Lava Jato lawsuits, among them that of former president Lula, Justice Gilmar Mendes attacked Lava Jato’s prosecutors, in particular, Deltan Dallagnol. (Photo: Internet Reproduction)

The Justice then said that the messages disclosed by The Intercept Brasil website show conduct which he dubbed “inconsistent with the fight against corruption, including petty corruption, cheap tactics, such as requesting tickets, selling lectures and the like”.

Justice Mendes was referring to prosecutor Deltan Dallagnol, who featured in the messages agreeing on lectures and telling other prosecutors to do the same. The prosecutor also suggested starting a shell company in his wife’s name, so he could profit more.

Dallagnol does not acknowledge the authenticity of the messages and denies irregularities.

Justice Mendes further mentioned the foundation that Deltan contemplated opening in order to manage a Petrobras fund. “The famous Dallagnol foundation, R$2.2 billion,” Mendes quoted.

“Thus: the stench of corruption, the style of corruption, the form of corruption, the matter of corruption. Therefore, the fight against corruption must be conducted at home, inclusively”, the Justice concluded.
